Then I hung out with Bilerico Project founder Bil Browning for an hour, spent my first week interning for the blog, and realized how little I knew. Since that first week, I've been challenged every day by the readers and contributors at The Bilerico Project and the rest of the LGBT media world, and I've learned so much in the process. I've learned about the current state of the movement, the various ideologies and philosophies surrounding activism and momentum-building, and the importance of our history. That's why I was so excited to take on the project of compiling a list of the most essential LGBT figures in history. These are figures I've been reading about all summer and seeing when, where, and how they influenced the broader LGBT movement. Who, of the hundreds of important LGBT people in history, will be included?

Not ready to accept that a significant part of its own population is, indeed, gay? However, contrast this attitude with texts that reach further back than the 20th century. Hinsch uses content analysis to show that in ancient Chinese texts dating back several thousands of years, love between men was a common phenomenon. The origin is a story of an emperor who was sharing his bed with one of his favored male servants. Hinsch shows that such an act was clearly perceived as love between the two men, as later literary works featured the same euphemism to express homoerotic love. Rather, many aspects of Chinese tradition were either lost or altered during the Cultural Revolution when then Chairman Mao Zedong encouraged the renunciation of tradition in order to embrace modernity.

Stonewall is often considered the beginning of forward progress in the gay rights movement. Each gay enclave, wrote George Chauncey in his book Gay New York: Gender, Urban Culture, and the Making of the Gay Male World, , had a different class and ethnic character, cultural style and public reputation.
Societal attitudes towards same-sex relationships have varied over time and place, from requiring all males to engage in same-sex relationships, to casual integration, through acceptance, to seeing the practice as a minor sin, repressing it through law enforcement and judicial mechanisms, and to proscribing it under penalty of death. In a study, Gwen Broude and Sarah Greene compared attitudes towards and frequency of homosexuality in the ethnographic studies available in the Standard cross-cultural sample. They found that out of 42 communities: homosexuality was accepted or ignored in 9; 5 communities had no concept of homosexuality; 11 considered it undesirable but did not set punishments; and 17 strongly disapproved and punished.
