The coronavirus and Wisconsin's safer-at-home order have forced some Milwaukee-area restaurants to close, costing precious revenue in a business that traditionally has thin margins. Some restaurants have begun to reopen at reduced capacity. The sports bar-restaurant closed Dec. Mayfair Collection's developer said that after the pandemic began, the restaurant suffered from capacity limits and declining business, as well as a drop in the number of sporting events to watch.

The deep woods of northern Wisconsin had many well-known gangster getaways during Prohibition, says Chad Lewis, author of "The Wisconsin Road Guide to Gangster Hot Spots," and southeastern Wisconsin has its share of legends and lore as well. Those who actually saw the wise guys are quickly slipping away into history themselves, Lewis notes, but many of the encounters have not been forgotten. Local historian Stephen Hauser of Elm Grove agrees.
